The Procedure of Fluoroscopically-Guided Injections
Here’s what you should know before your fluoroscopically-guided injection:
- You will be scheduled at one of our five Arizona locations, where you will be for approximately 1 hour total.
- You should take your routine medications (i.e., blood pressure and diabetic medications) on the day of your procedure.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment.
Here’s what to expect on the day of your procedure:
- You will lie face-up on a procedure table.
- The physician will use fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance to visualize the joint.
- The physician will scrub your skin with sterile soap, place a drape on your hip, shoulder, or knee, and numb a small area of skin with anesthetic medication.
- After the anesthetic has been given time to be effective, the physician will then direct a tiny needle using fluoroscopic guidance into the affected joint.
- The physician will inject a small amount of contrast (dye) to ensure proper needle position and then a small mixture of anesthetic and steroid or PRP into the joint.
Recovery and Outcomes
After the injection, you’ll be monitored briefly to ensure no immediate reactions to the medication. While uncommon, temporary side effects, such as soreness, bruising, or mild discomfort at the injection site, can occur. Our staff will discuss these with you beforehand and provide instructions for managing any discomfort.
You may return to your normal activities following the procedure, including returning to work.
